Freeze select Mike O'Neil as Associate Hockey Director
Coach Mike is a USA Hockey Level 4 coach, who has been coaching for over 15 years. Coach Mike hails from the tiny Northern New York town of Madrid, where he began playing the sport at age 4. His parents and grandparents drove him to practices and games all over New York, and into Southern Canada, while his grandpa Red flooded the backyard every winter, instilling a love for the sport early in life. Coach Mike played his youth hockey at Norfolk-Norwood Minor Hockey and played high school hockey for the Norwood-Norfolk Flyers, earning a Section X Championship and NY State playoff appearance in 1998. Coach Mike went on to play club hockey for SUNY Potsdam during his college years.
Coach Mike has coached all levels of Tier II hockey, from U8 to U18 AA, for the Frederick Freeze and Frederick Fury, and was the Frederick Victory Assistant Hockey Director from 2013-2016. He also coaches the West Virginia Vipers high school hockey team, who recently earned a trip to Nationals in 2019.
Coach Mike is an 18 year Montgomery County Public Schools elementary teacher who currently teaches Grade 4 writing, science, and social studies at Rockwell ES, in Damascus, who has a Master’s Degree as Reading Specialist from SUNY Potsdam, and an Administrative Certificate from Johns Hopkins.
Coach Mike is all about family. When he’s not at the rink, you can find him enjoying time with his wife, Kristin, their boys, Braeden and Kellan, and their two dogs, Maisy and Noki. Coach also enjoys coaching baseball for MAYAA, bombing around in his Jeep, fishing, and wailing on the drums.
